Five Benefits Of Reading The Bible Every Day
Why is it important to stay in God’s Word? We’ve come to an important point in this study about the Bible This is where we have to answer a very personal and critical question: Do I really believe that I need to read this Book every day?
It’s easy to vaguely believe that the Bible is an important Book. It’s easy to claim that it’s the only source for truth. But do you really believe that you are supposed to read this Book daily?
It’s easy to know whether you believe this or not….if you believed it, you would do it. No more beating around the bush here….are you going to stay in this Book or not? Because if you’re still putting off reading the Bible until you “have time” - then you don’t really think it’s important at all.
So...let me help you out with this decision. I want to show you five more benefits of habitually reading the Bible. Why should we be reading this Book every day?
#1 - Daily reading is necessary to stay strong against deception
Matthew 24:4 “Take heed that no one deceives you.”
1 Corinthians 3:18 “Let no one deceive himself.”
1 Corinthians 6:9 “Do not be deceived.”
Galatians 6:7 “Do not be deceived.”
Ephesians 5:6 “Let no one deceive you with empty words…”
Colossians 2:4 “Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words.”
2 Thessalonians 2:3 “Let no one deceive you by any means…”
Let’s face it, there are a lot of people who are great at telling lies. Sometimes deceivers know that what they’re saying isn’t true. But more often, those who are speaking lies are doing so because they’re deceived themselves.
This world is full of deception...and the worst part of it all is this: you don’t know when you’re deceived! The nature of deception is that you believe a lie as if it were the truth. If you knew that you were being deceived...then you wouldn’t be deceived, right? That is a frightening thought - that I could’ve bought into a lie, and not even know it!
How can you expose the areas in your life where you are deceived? By reading the Word! John 8:31-32 shows us this plainly: Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
The more you learn about God’s Word, the less likely it is for you to be led astray by a smooth-talking heretic. Staying inside the pages of the Bible on a daily basis is the only way to keep from being swept away by the current of our deceived culture. The only way to stand firm against deception is to stay grounded in the truth!
Without a daily habit of reading God’s word, the emotional arguments of the world begin to make sense to your natural mind. You’ll begin to sympathize with the so-called “fairness” and “tolerance” arguments. You’ll begin to be persuaded that humanity can be good without God. You’ll start to buy into the idea that “I don’t have the right to tell someone that they’re wrong.”
Truth stands tall in the midst of deception. In spite of the entire world turning their back on it, truth remains true! We must stand firm in the truth of God’s Word, even when it’s looked down upon by the rest of the world. And the only way to know this truth, is to abide in God’s Word.
#2 - Daily reading is necessary to keep yourself clean from sin
Psalm 119:9 NIrV - How can a young person keep his life pure? By living in keeping with your word.
Psalm 119:11 Your Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against You.
When Jesus was faced with temptation in Matthew chapter four, what did He do? In every temptation, He responded like this; “It is written…” The Word of God, spoken from His mouth, was what He used to combat the temptations that were brought against Him. Jesus, operating on this earth as a man, kept Himself clean by holding to God’s Word.
This is how it still works today! Getting God’s Word inside of you is the only way to fight the sin that tangles you up so easily. Fill yourself up with what the Bible says. When you do this, you can respond to temptation the same way Jesus did - ”It is written…”
Holding to the standards of the Bible will keep you from sinking into the world’s filth. It’s easier than ever to get caught in sin and not even realize it’s wrong. The only way to keep yourself from falling into sin is to have a firm grasp on the Scriptures. The standards that God gave us in His Word will keep us clean and free from sin...if we internalize them!
#3 - Knowing the Bible gives you answers to the world’s questions
1 Peter 3:15 NLT And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it.
Let’s face it, life is full of problems. As Christians, we’re going to be asked some tough questions by unbelievers. I’ll say it over and over again...the only place you’ll find those answers is in the Bible! Every single question the world will ever ask has its answer in the pages of Scripture. If we want to have answers to give, then we need to stay inside the Bible.
All too often though, Christians are the ones still asking all the same questions! One would expect an unbeliever to ask questions like “Why would a loving God allow so much suffering in this world?” But how many times have we heard Christians ask questions like this? Listen to me, my brother or sister...it's up to you to learn these answers before the world asks you!
Any Christian that doesn’t read the Bible is going to have a lot of unanswered questions! There have been way too many times that a fellow believer asks me “Where did you learn that from?” I don’t intend this to be sarcastic answer...but I inevitably end up saying, “It’s in the Bible.” Why? Because it’s the truth! Every answer you’ll ever need to know is right there, waiting for you to discover it!
If we want to be able to answer the tough questions, we have to stay rooted in God’s Word!
#4 - The Bible is necessary if you want to find wisdom
Have you ever noticed that the most profound ideas are stated so simply in the Bible? Just look at these few examples of amazing truths and ideas, summed up in a single sentence from God’s Word:
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” – Matthew 7:12
“The man who wants friends must show himself friendly” – Proverbs 18:24
“If you don’t work, you don’t eat” – 2 Thessalonians 3:10
“Don’t muzzle the ox while it treads the grain” – Deuteronomy 25:4
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” – Matthew 7:12
“The man who wants friends must show himself friendly” – Proverbs 18:24
“If you don’t work, you don’t eat” – 2 Thessalonians 3:10
“Don’t muzzle the ox while it treads the grain” – Deuteronomy 25:4
It is an absolute fact that reading the Bible simply makes someone smarter! This is a benefit of the Scriptures that is clearly stated in Proverbs 1:4-5. (NIRV)
“They give understanding to childish people.
They give knowledge and good sense to those who are young.
Let wise people listen and add to what they have learned.
Let those who understand what is right get guidance.”
“They give understanding to childish people.
They give knowledge and good sense to those who are young.
Let wise people listen and add to what they have learned.
Let those who understand what is right get guidance.”
God’s Word will make you wiser than any enemy you may encounter.
Psalm 119:98 You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies.
Psalm 119:98 You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies.
God’s Word will make you wiser than any of your teachers (that have no relationship with His Word)
Psalm 119:99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation.
Psalm 119:99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation.
God’s Word will even make you wiser than ancient wise men (who didn’t know His Word)
Psalm 119:100 I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts.
Psalm 119:100 I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts.
Do you want to be wise? Do you want intelligence that is greater than the ancients? Do you want to stay a step ahead of your enemies? Then keep your nose in this Book!
#5 - The Bible is needed to receive direction in life
God’s word gives His people direction. Whatever decisions you’re facing, the guidance you need is inside the Bible! This is seen most clearly in Psalm 119:105, “Your Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” The NIrV children’s Bible makes this verse’s point even easier to see, “Your word is like a lamp that shows me the way. It is like a light that guides me.”
That’s not to say that God wrote down a specific road map for your life in the Bible. After all, God’s Word is universal. If it were to specifically map out every decision you will face in life, then it wouldn’t apply to anyone else, right? But God wrote this Book to apply to everyone around the world. When you think about, it’s ingeniously written! This is a book that was finished 2,000 years ago, and yet still applies to every single person that’s ever lived! It is capable of guiding every single decision that anyone has ever made...including you!
Whenever we read the pages of this book, the Author Himself will speak to us, and bring the truth of those words into our specific situation. This ancient and timeless work is more relevant to us than any other book, no matter when it was written.
These are only five of the benefits that we receive when we keep a daily habit of reading the Bible.
We won't be easily deceived.
We can stay clean from sin.
We can answer any of the world’s questions.
We can possess a wisdom that passes any natural intelligence.
We can find guidance for every decision we’ll ever have to make.
We won't be easily deceived.
We can stay clean from sin.
We can answer any of the world’s questions.
We can possess a wisdom that passes any natural intelligence.
We can find guidance for every decision we’ll ever have to make.
Let’s be diligent to be people of the Book.
