How To Become A Former Homosexual
“Where do you stand on homosexuality?”
Have you ever been asked that? On more than one occasion, I’ve been asked some version of this question. Sometimes it was an honestly asked question; other times it was an invitation to a debate. Every time, my answer was the same: “I believe the Bible.”
No matter which side of the debate you’re on, you know where I stand now, don’t you? As soon as I say those words - “I believe the Bible” - everyone knows what I believe about this. Even for Christians who’ve compromised their stand, there is no doubt about the Bible’s stance on homosexuality. The Bible clearly calls it a sin.
(Now, if you happen to disagree with me on this topic...please hang on! Finish reading this post first, then you can react to it. You may find hope here….)
In case you’ve never seen it, here are a few verses that show us God’s stand on this topic:
Romans 1:26-27 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.
1 Timothy 1:9-10 ...knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine...
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
There is no doubt about the Bible’s teaching on homosexuality. These are New Testament passages that make it clear - homosexual activity is sin. There is no getting around it, God says it is wrong. And He would know...He made you. If anyone would know how sex is supposed to work, it would be Him! And He clearly said that sex should be between one man and one woman - in the covenant of marriage.
The Freedom that Comes From Changing the Narrative
Whether you realize it or not, there is great freedom that comes from calling homosexuality what it is - a sin. You see, it seems as if society has bought a lie about this. We’ve accepted a false premise, a narrative that has changed the entire debate about whether homosexuality is right or wrong. This is the false narrative: homosexuality is an identity, not a behavior.
It seems as if all sides of the debate have accepted this narrative as fact:
The world says, “This is who they are, you can’t tell them they’re wrong.”
Compromising Christians say, “This is how God made them, you can’t tell them they’re wrong.”
Opposing Christians say, “We can’t have people like this...they’re wrong and they can never be right.”
We’re all arguing from the same viewpoint: That homosexuality is an identity that cannot change.
But what if that were true of other sins in the verses above? What if we thought that idolaters could never change? What about alcoholics? What if we treated covetous people the same way we treated homosexuals? What if we condemned everyone to the sins that they’ve committed? Would there be anyone left in our churches?
My friends, when you truly understand what sin is, when you truly understand what Jesus did to sin’s power over us, then you’ll start to see something amazing. You’ll begin to see that there is freedom when you identify homosexuality as a sin. Why? Because Jesus came to save us from our sin!
Matthew 1:21 “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” This is why Jesus came - to set us free from sin! As long as we’re agreeing with the world that people are homosexuals, then we’ll never show them that there’s power to be free! We need to agree with God, that there are people committing homosexuality, but that Jesus came to save them from their sin.
Jesus came to save liars from their sin.
Jesus came to save alcoholics from their sin.
Jesus came to save adulterers from their sin.
Jesus came to save homosexuals from their sin.
Jesus came to save alcoholics from their sin.
Jesus came to save adulterers from their sin.
Jesus came to save homosexuals from their sin.
“But you were washed…”
Do you believe that homosexuals can be saved from their sin?
Let me give you an example from scripture. Let’s look back at 1 Corinthians 6 again, but this time let’s read a verse further:
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”
Did you realize that the Corinthian church had former homosexuals in it? And yet, Jesus washed them from it! He sanctified (separated) them from their sin. And then He justified them from it! Clearly then, God could tell the difference between who they are and what they were doing!
Jesus offers homosexuals the same hope that he offers any other sinners - freedom! Glory to God! The same power that can save you from fornication, theft, or covetousness can save you from homosexuality! There is no difference….sin is sin. All sin separates you from God. But God offers you forgiveness for all sin!
This is how you become a former…
...alcoholic…
...thief…
...liar…
...homosexual…
God’s grace is is how we become former sinners!
