Identity Crisis - The Great I AM

Exodus 3:13-15 Then Moses said to God, "Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they say to me, 'What is His name?' what shall I say to them?" And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM' has sent me to you.'" Moreover God said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: 'The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.'" This is the eternal and sacred name of the one true God. He is the great I AM WHO I AM.   This is known as the tetragrammaton, the name of the infinite God in just four letters - YHWH. It has been translated Yahweh  and Jehovah . Orthodox Jews have such a high level of respect for this name, that they almost never writ...

Identity Crisis - What's In A Name?

As we have already seen, the Bible is clear about this truth: Jesus is God! Today, we'll start looking at Scriptural evidence for Jesus' divinity . Specifically, let's look at some of the different names and titles that the New Testament uses for Jesus - names and titles that clearly show Jesus' identity as the one, true God. The Name of Jesus Matthew 1:20-21 - But while he thought about these things, behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." The name "Jesus" is a Greek translation of the Hebrew name Joshua. It literally means "the LORD is salvation", or "the LORD saves". Even though this name has the great name of Yahweh  built into it, it is not by itself  an in...

Identity Crisis - Who Jesus Really Is

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Two Versions of Christianity It appears that the word "Christian" doesn't mean what it once did....and the new definition is no improvement. It used to be that "Christians" were people who followed the Gospel of Jesus Christ as it was once revealed in the pages of Scriptures. These were people who made sure to attend church every Sunday, who honored the Word of God, and who weren't afraid to stand against sin. They were also among the most generous, caring, and compassionate people that you could find ( although they were never considered to be kind by the secular world .)  In short, a Christian was someone who had...

The Theme of the New Testament

Hopefully, we learned enough to settle this once and for all:  Jesus is the Messiah . He is the Anointed One that was foretold throughout the Old Testament scriptures. Unlike the kings and priests of ancient times, Jesus was not anointed with  oil  but with the  Holy Spirit . Isaiah 61:1 promised this: " The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, because the LORD has anointed Me... " And Acts 10:38 tells us that Jesus was the fulfillment of this promise: " How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power ..." Knowing this truth is essential to being born-again. We've already covered this in depth in earlier posts, though; so I don't plan to go over it again here. What I want to do today is completely change the way you and I read the New Testament. You see, all to often we fail to realize that the entire theme of the New Testament is this:  Jesus is our Messiah, and we are in Him! The biggest reason we fail to see this messianic me...

Easter, Vomit, and The Father's Love

So, Easter night was very interesting one at my house. If you're squeamish, you may not want to read on... We spent our day celebrating like anyone else; going to church, visiting with family, eating a big dinner, finding eggs and eating candy. My kids got a lot  of candy that day. We tried to limit how much they ate, but my oldest son Jonah has learned to eat first and ask about it later. At two years old, this young man's day was filled with eating strange things (for him) at dinner time and then munching on all the sweets he could get his hands on. Of course, you know what this led to. At 2:00 AM Monday morning, I woke up to him crying in his room. As I stepped in, I knew by the smell that something terrible had happened. My little boy had thrown up on his pillow. I don't think he was really awake at the time, but he was sitting up in his bed and pointing to the dark spot where his head was. At this point, I hadn't turned the lights on, I didn't know how ...
