Identity Crisis - Only God Could Do That

While Jesus was operating in His earthly body, He functioned as a righteous man that was anointed by the Holy Ghost. Acts 10:38 tells us that " God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil. " The reason Jesus preached with power, healed the sick, performed many miracles was not because He was God. (Don't get me wrong, He was and is God...but that isn't why He did these miraculous works.) The reason He did these mighty things was because He was anointed by the Holy Spirit . But there were certain things that we see - certain authorities  that He claimed - that only God alone could possess. Specifically, there were three claims that He made that were Divine rights, not available to any mere man. He Sent Prophets When we read through the Old Testament, we see a marked difference between true  prophets and false  prophets. The difference wasn't the miracles  that ...

Identity Crisis - Things Only God Could Receive

During Jesus' earthly ministry, there were times when people would relate Jesus in completely unnatural ways. Certain people would say and do things that would not make sense if Jesus were merely a man . Today, let's look at three things that were given to ( or targeted at ) Jesus, that should only be given to God alone. It's important to realize, never once did Jesus ever correct these people! Perfect Praise Matthew 21:15-16 But when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that He did, and the children crying out in the temple and saying, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" they were indignant and said to Him, "Do you hear what these are saying?" And Jesus said to them, "Yes. Have you never read, 'Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise'?" During the triumphant entry to Jerusalem, the kids that saw Jesus riding into town were dancing and praising Him...crying out "Hosanna to the ...

Identity Crisis - The Messiah or the LORD? (part 3)

I'm assuming you've read my previous posts, where we began learning from Scriptures that the Messiah is one and the same as the LORD. (If you haven't read it, it would be good to start with Part 1 and Part 2 .) Let's jump right back in and continue. Whose Throne Will Everyone Bow Before? Most Christians are familiar with the Biblical teaching that everyone will bow before Jesus' throne and confess Him to be Lord. This teaching mainly comes from Paul's writing in Philippians 2:9-11, which says: "Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. " But what a lot of people don't realize is that Paul didn't come up with this teaching on His own. Paul was referencing an Old Testament...

Identity Crisis - The Messiah or the LORD? (part 2)

I'm assuming you've read my previous post, where we began learning from Scriptures that the Messiah is one and the same as the LORD. (If you haven't read it, it would be good to start there .) Let's jump right back in and continue. Who Taught the People? In Isaiah 54:13, we read this prophecy: "All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children. " What an amazing promise, that there would be a generation that was literally taught by Yahweh Himself! Jesus quoted this passage in John 6:45, claiming that this promise was being fulfilled at that moment. " It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me ." Here we see the one true LORD - Jesus Himself - personally teaching the people who came to Him to learn. Whose Glory Did Isaiah See? Of course, we know that even though they were taught  by Go...

Identity Crisis - The Messiah or the LORD? (part 1)

We've been learning about Jesus' divinity...that is to say, His identity as God. So far, we've covered: 1. That believing Jesus is God is the cornerstone of Christianity 2. That His names and titles identify Him as God. 3. That He called Himself the "I AM." Now we're switching gears and examining some key Messianic passages. Believe it or not, there are actually passages in Scripture that identify the Messiah  as God Himself . These passages of scripture ( typically an Old Testament statement about Yahweh that is fulfilled in Jesus ) clearly demonstrate Jesus' divine nature. Let's take a look! The Bethlehem Prophecy Matthew 2:5-6 So they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.'" This was a prophecy about the birthplace of the ...
